HVAC Basics
Definition: Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
HVAC is a common term used to refer to any type of system that heats, cools, or cleans air in indoor spaces and moves air between indoor and outdoor spaces. They are systems that keep you cool in the summer and cozy in the winter.
How does HVAC Work?
Each component of your HVAC system may be seperate, however it is more common for combined systems such as central heating and AC systems to have a single blower to ciculate air via internal ducts in a home, or with a ductless system for different rooms or zones in the house.
Although there are several different types of HVAC systems, they all begin with the same essentials. First, fresh air must be taken from outside the building to the inside. This process is called ventilation and is necessary to replenish oxygen, remove odors, carbon dioxide, and excessive moisture.
Mechanical ventilartion uses a mechanical system, the ‘V’ in HVAC, to move the air in and out. Once air is brought in, it is drawn into an air handling unit where it is filtered, heated, cooled, and dried. Once the air is ready, it’s directed into the home via ducts or directly from the HVAC unit.
